People can tell if you are trying to just pick up a reader/buyer. It feels good to help others and that is a way of picking up a fan of you personally...When I'm a fan of a person (rather than a schmooze acquaintence) I'm much more likely to buy their book (and maybe several - to cover Xmas gifts for several friends sna relatives. Lots of good points, especially about building relationships. It's difficult sometimes to make real connections amidst all the "Buy my book! Me! Me! Me!" chatter out there.
